The Cloud Forests of Monteverde

If you love the mountains, this is stop you can’t miss. If you love the idea of forests with thick cloud layers that bring rich biodiversity of species and serve as a cooling center among more humid surroundings, you also cannot miss checking out Monteverde! This mountain destination takes a little time to get to no matter which direction you go because it’s in the undeveloped Costa Rican mountains in the middle of a large cloud forest region. That said, it’s worth the time it takes to get there. You can get there by car, Jeep-Boat-Jeep (from La Fortuna), and bus. This area is split between Monteverde and Santa Elena with a road that connects the two areas. Santa Elena is where a lot of the shopping and restaurants are located where they are concentrated in a very walkable radius. Monteverde with a few miles from there and things are more spread out in that art of the area. You can think of Monteverde as the more scenic portion whereas Santa Elena has more of a quant mountain town vibe with a splash of tourism.

There are no Ubers or buses here, so if you are not driving, your options for transport at taxis, by foot, or transport that often is included with tours. I had a rental car in 2024 which allowed me to stay further removed from the concentrated Santa Elena areas and go further into the mountains to check out activities that peeked my interest, but even if you don’t have a car, my experience is that this location is still very viable to navigate with the right selection of activities.
